Certification Exams

In some countries, including England and Australia, graduating from an accredited program is the requirement for entry to practice for a Radiological Technologist. Alternately, in Canada, the US, and other countries, certification exams are required to be a practicing Technologist.

In Canada, all students graduating from Canadian accredited programs must write the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification exam in order to practice in Canada. The exam is a competency based exam, written in two 3-hour sessions, with a total of 250 multiple choice questions (CAMRT, 2009). In the US, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) provides certification in Radiography. Candidates write a 220 multiple choice question exam. (ARRT, 2010). In the Philippines, graduates of a recognized school with a Baccalaureate degree in radiologic technology sit for the registry exam (PRC, 2010).

The big question for any student is how to prepare for this extremely important exam.

The CAMRT provides, in addition to the study guide, an online practice exam. You can take this exam by going to
http://camrt.protraining.com/ and registering. There are practice exams for all of the CAMRT professional streams including Radiological Technology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Today, Blogger and Instructor, Hariette made a post on her blog "Radiology 101" about a Radiologic Technology review program. The program consists of lecture-style review over a period of two months to prepare students for their board examination.

Another approach is to use the study guides
published, for example Mosby's Comprehensive Review of Radiography or Lange Q&A: Radiography Examination, which are written based on the ARRT examination. These guides receive mixed reviews, some readers saying they did not contain all the required information for the exam, while others say they were a big help in their studies (Amazon, 2004). I bought the Mosby's book last year thinking it might be a little help studying for my CAMRT exam this spring. The book is useful in that it provides multiple-choice questions to practice with. However, the book does not provide in depth or complete information as I would assume is needed to pass the CAMRT exam. There are currently no published study guides for the CAMRT examinations.

Early after the discovery of X-rays, one journalist suggested that X-rays could be used to directly project radiographic images into the minds of students (Dewing, 1962). If only.

Any wise words of advice on preparing for these exams?

  6. "There are currently no published study guides for the CAMRT examinations." This is something I've found extremely frustrating! I wrote my ARRT Radiography Registry in 2005, my CT Registry in 2008 and am trying to prepare to write the CAMRT Exam in 2011...the prep-guide, competency profiles and practice exam they offer are quite frankly, a joke. Why is it there is no adequate comprehensive exam review books or resources for what they call 'Internationally Educated MRTs' for the CAMRT Exam?? Even just coming from the U.S., it's pretty intimidating not to have any prep to rely on. There are tons of resources for the ARRT Registries, though. Anyone know of anything recently out??

  7. Hi Nancy,

I recently wrote the ARRT exam and I found the review books very helpful. Unfortunately there is no Canadian equivalent (I don't know why not) but I do know people who have used the American books as review for the CAMRT exam and passed. The American books aren't actually published by the ARRT.

Be sure to try the practice exam as it is a good example of what the exam is really like (http://camrt.protraining.com/).

The CAMRT is aware that internationally educated MRTs have more difficulty with the exam and they're working on producing better review materials for IEMRTs. (I know this doesn't help you much, but it is interesting)

You may find the curriculum guide helpful: http://www.camrt.ca/english/profession/pdf/Curr_guide_Radiological_Technology.pdf
It has a lot more information than the competency profile. I would strongly recommend looking through this as it has lists of projections and pathologies you have to know.

You might also want to look at Safety code 35: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/alt_formats/hecs-sesc/pdf/pubs/radiation/safety-code_35-securite/safety-code35-securite-eng.pdf
Its one of the recommended readings and it talks about QC stuff in Canada.

    Hope this helped.

  8. As a recent graduate from a radiography program I found it quite overwhelming, stressful, and very time consuming to prepare for the ARRT radiography exam (aka radiography registry).

So I literally created my own study guide.

Kind of like the study guides to study guides.

I studied and researched people who passed the exam the first time and thought it was easy and soon found commonalities.

So if you are preparing for the ARRT radiography exam now or soon and want some help or advice check this out.

I made a video for you called "3 Keys To Pass The Radiography Registry With Ease" and you can view it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daRTF4j2aJ0

    I hope this helps,

    Mike

  9. Hi all,
this is the first time i have come across fellow frustrated IEMRTs!
I have been studying for the CAMRT exam in preparation to write it this Sept (in 2 weeks...aaarghh)and am yet to find any useful resources i can study from except for the CAMRT reading list!
the CAMRT sample 100 questions are seriously not reflective of the actual exam...saying it from experience (this will be my 2nd attempt).
anyone with any tips or to help me pass this exam once and for all will be greatly appreciated.
i do hope CMRTO/CAMRT realize how selfish it is to make us do this exam without any kind of adequate resources....even the medical students have access to past exams and questions banks! :(

    Truly frustrated.

  10. Positioning is a basic key in passing CAMRT. They made the most recent exam more challenging and with lots of film critique.
I don't think they really want internationally trained RT to pass esp. in BC as there's no review center. 2009 review from BCIT, out of 21 reviewee only 2 passed, no wonder they stop the program. 800$ is way to expensive!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Truly frustrated,

This may be too late as you might have already written the exam but the curriculum guide contains a lot more information than just the reading list (http://www.camrt.ca/certification/canadian/competencyprofiles/Curr_guide_Radiological_Technology.pdf). Did you take a look at this?

What kind of resources would do you wish were available? Just more sample questions or something else?

  12. I am another IERMT finding really difficult to study for the written exam here in Canada. It is very disappointing to find out there are really no review books/prep guide or something more specific as apposed to go over the books used for the last 4 years in University.

  13. Hi, I am writing the CAMRT in January 2012 in Vancouver. Has anyone taken the revised exam last September? Or would anyone like to study/ and share notes for the January exam? thx

    ReplyDelete
  14. I too am looking to take the CAMRT exam in Jan 2012. The studies are showing only 44% of IERMTs pass? I found a site showing that the most difficult parts for international techs were Equipment, Patient care, professionalism, Ethics and radiation protection. That's a lot to weed through. I have pulled out my old review materials from passing the ARRT. Frankly, some of the links provided for review material don't work and I don't know what legal junk I need to review to understand differences in subjects such as informed consent and restraints, privacy law, ect.

Come on CAMRT. This is seriously lacking.

  17. Hi I am an IEMRT also. I failed CAMRT exam for the third time. My 2nd time I failed by 1 mark. And when I ask for a recount they told me it's been manually counted again and it's a waste of money and time but if I insist I have to pay $50 for it. The exam is made up of 200 questions but after the exam they removed out 2 or 5 questions and every exams they do that for what reason I don't know. It should be exactly 200 questions but when you get the result, you will noticed that some questions were void making your chance of passing slimmer if you are in the bubble. Sep 2012 exam a lot of examinees who are 2nd or 3rd takers thought that it was the easiest exam but when we got the result, we got the worst score ever. I thought I am going to passed on my 3rd exam but what can I do. Less than 35% of IEMRTs passed the exam. I have 1 classmate from the bridging program who was a GP doctor in his country of origin passed the CAMRT exam on his 3rd try. How come a guy who had no experience in xray/ct passed this exam and how can't I or the rest of my colleagues with 5-40 years of work experience can't passed it, I mean if he can do it why can't I? There is something wrong here, am I right? But what can I do I choose to live here in Canada not in UK where you only need to be assessed by HPC I think or the US to passed the ARRT which a lot of Candian gradutes says to be easier. We are taking the " most difficult xray exam in the world", I suggest to all newcomers if you have limited resources, get a job first and don't ever ever think that you can practice that easy here cause really it is devastating if you work all your life as a Radiologic Technologist in your respective country, gave up your status and after taking the CAMRT exam you can't passed it. Have a Plan B instead. They open up their doors for the medical professionals from other country but when you get here the colleges are not yet ready to open theirs. You can't find any resources on the internet but you can buy or go to the library to check all the recommended books in the camrt website. That's the only answer you will get from them, try asking them on their Facebook page and you will not find any answer except that unless you can get some people are really really nice that can give you some name of the books that they used here. The bridging program here is not effective. Most of the teachers are Canadian graduates which is less effective cause they don't know what to teach IEMRTs.Only 2% of my class passed the exam which were 2nd or 3rd takers. My advice is read everything page by page, having a Canadian xray student will help a lot and lastly pray to God. Good Luck in taking the CAMRT exam.

  27. So I took the CAMRT exam in Toronto in May 2014 in Radiological Technology and passed. It was difficult, and 4 hours went really fast. Try to keep track of time and just get to the next question if you don't know the answer right away. Then go back for the unsure ones later and take a guess if nothin else. The Competency profile and exam blueprints are useful, read them well.

Now I'm planning to apply for jobs in Canada, while still working in Europe. Moving with a job offer would make things easier with the immigration process.
Anyone else in the same situation?
I guess it's more common to move to Canada right away and apply for employment there.

Good luck to all exam takers!

  30. I am also planning to take the CAMRT exam in january but I am having second thoughts after reading the comments here. Based on my experience the exam was really difficult(I already took it twice). On my second try I thought i was going to pass because i was pretty sure i was able to answer a lot of the questions correctly. to my surprise i failed again. and when i talked to the other examinees who failed they told me that they thought they were also going to pass but they failed as well. that is very frustrating and somewhat fishy. I am now thinking of taking the ARRT as everyone is saying that it is much easier to pass than CAMRT but i dont know where to start. I am a graduate from the philippines so i dont know if ARRT will approve my credentials if i apply to take the ARRT exam. I hope someone can help me out. please email me at chuchu_pogi@yahoo.com. thanks in advance.

    1. Hi !! How is your prepartion for the exam going??

  32. It is high time we chip in something about this camrt exam. The story about this exam is really not good and frustrating.
How does camrt feel about these failures after each exam. The management of camrt should look into it critically and come out with a clear solution in this issue. The camrt is the only professional exam that has no clue to guide their candidates into making the exam.No past questions to study,no book to assist the candidate even though the questions is becoming tougher every season. Those guides we usually find on camrt website cannot lead the candidate to anywhere compared to what you see on the exam day.
This exam is discussed both internally and internationally to evaluate the content of the exams which is good both the ways of coming out of the exams by the candidates is a huge problem because the managers of the exam really does not provide ways to assist the candidates during preparation for the exam. The most heat on this problem is the foreign trained professional who are to face the same exam with the canadian trained fresh graduates. Many of whom have been in practice for year not less than fifteen or more years only to come to this and got trapped into this camrt license exam.
However the exam is necessary but the way and manner in which the exam is being handled by camrt should be given a second look. Make material for it's preparation available for candidates such past questions and a book like ARRT and so many other professional examinations will go a long way to help candidates.
In another development I am suggesting a system of after four attempts a candidate can be subjected to do two years bridging program with 60 percent practical to really evaluate him or her before licence can be issued to such candidate without sitting for exam.
Again depending on your years of practice say from fifteen years and above the candidate can be made to undergo a training program depending on the province and after which the candidate will be giving a temporary license practice while still writing the national exam, instead waiting so long trying to pass the national exam and even the experience he had back home may have been forgotten ad a
Well due to months or years of writing camrt exam.
Please I will like the management of camrt to look into these ideas and suggestions of so many people and come out with a blue print on how to alleviate the sufferings of foreign trained and some canadian graduates alike.
    Thanks.
